August 6-9 Cubs Series Recap

By Brad Tunney

CaptureThe South Bend Cubs have been the class of the Midwest League all season and once again they showed the Loons why. Great Lakes, after a four-game series sweep at Four Winds Field, has now lost seven straight to South Bend and it has been due to a lack of offense. The Loons have now dug themselves an even bigger hole en route to trying to secure a second half playoff berth. In the process of the sweep a couple of things were uncovered as some not-so-good trends for Great Lakes. South Bend starting pitching and left-handed pitching in general have prohibited the Loons from getting closer to the playoffs.

#DiveIn Deeper
  • The Loons and Cubs just wrapped up a stretch of eight games against each other in a span of 11 days. During those eight games, South Bend starting pitching stymied the Loons offense.
  • South Bend starters by the numbers:
    • 8 G, 5 QS, 6-0, 46.2 IP, 30 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 8 BB, 49 K, 0.77 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, .200 BAA (The Loons still have four games left against South Bend this year)
  • On top of South Bend starting pitching, left-handed starting pitching has been a problem for the Loons as well, and especially on the road. Great Lakes has not won a game in which a left-handed starter has opposed them since July 9th. On the road, the Loons have not won a game against a left-handed starter since June 14th. Those dates can be a bit deceiving.
  • Since July 9th the Loons have only faced a left-handed starter seven times (five of which came against South Bend). Since June 14th, the Loons have only faced a left-handed starter on the road six times. In total, the Loons are just 3-14 against left-handed starters on the road this season.
